Celebration
Vancouver student receives award for poster designed as
part of statewide education program on role of hydrogen fuel
cell in clean energy production
Olympia, WA – April 20, 2004 – Ashley B., a Vancouver, Washington
7th-grader will receive an award for her creative approach
to educating fellow students and the public on the benefits
of hydrogen fuel cell technology and it future role in Washington’s
clean energy programs. As the winner of the 2004 Save a Watt
poster contest, Ashley, along with her teacher, Ron Wright,
will be recognized by Superintendent of Public Instruction
Dr. Terry Bergeson during Earth Day festivities Sunday, April
25 at 2 p.m. in Olympia.
The Save a Watt poster contest is part of the Washington
Fuel Cell Education Program, an initiative funded by a grant
in support of the Northwest Energy Technology Collaborative
(NWETC), a regional organization dedicated to advancing the
development of new and emerging technologies surrounding clean,
sustainable, renewable energy sources. The grant was funded
by the Department of Energy to educate students and the public
about fuel cell technology and is administered by the Washington
State Department of Community, Trade & Economic Development
(CTED) and the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA).
“Fuel cells have the potential to generate power more efficiently
and with less impact on the environment,” notes Jeff Morris,
Director of the Northwest Energy Technology Collaborative
(NWETC). “Education is a critical step in building awareness
about new energy technologies and garnering the support necessary
to ensure these innovations develop into commercial energy
sources.”
As part of the grant, Ashley’s poster will be developed into
a permanent display that will be shown throughout the state
as part of ongoing education on new technologies that play
a role in advancing the energy industry.
